Should You Have a Private Social Media Policy?
Ok, I know many social media users will argue that this is going too far but have you considered having your own social media policy? Many social media users will subconsciously carefully consider what they post, particularly in consideration of their professional profile, but I think it’s well worth taking the time to document what you consider appropriate content to post on-line.
My particular beef at the moment is with job applications. We get many people who kindly take the time to write into us asking for work, and we have in fact successfully found fantastic employees this way. So I encourage applicants to keep doing this as a means of finding gainful employment.
However, it’s very easy to throw a job application in the bin for the following social media faux pas:
- Email address: You would not believe some of the email names that I come accross that I am supposed to respond to. I mean, if you’re looking for a job (in a law firm, or any job for that matter), have the courtesy to register some innocuous and inoffensive email address. Just your name on GMail will do fine.
- Google profile: Do applicants understand that the first thing a potential employer will do is google their name? If you are intending to find a job, please take the time to find out what comes up when you google your name. Remove or adjust anything offensive. This includes making sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and professional in appearance; likewise with your twitter profile and tweets. It’s not a good look to see endless profanity and offensive content.
Consider a private social media policy; it could be a great one page document to refer to as part of a job finding strategy. A good social media and online profile demonstrates professionalism and an understanding of the world we live in.
